Hello, Basketeers! Get ready for basket club in prospect park next Saturday, June 24, 1-6 pm open house style. Here’s the spot:
Here are the notes from basket club last Saturday: I worked on standardizing the form of a practice basket that we can teach people to make. I want to be a little better of a teacher so basketeers don’t get discouraged if their first basket is slow or extra rustic 😂
I guess I want to do whatever will convince people to come back.
My friend Ayako came and made her second basket ever, it came out really well.
I really like the flared shape she got, most of my baskets tend to have sides that either go straight up or aim slightly inwards. She told me she got this shape by constantly guiding the side stakes apart, and by pushing down on the spot where the twist tie was bundling the side stakes together. I’m going to try it next time.
Some kids stopped by, their parents were having a picnic nearby in the park. An outgoing five-year-old told me her name and announced, “this is interesting to me.” She went on to zhuzh up our tool basket with a willow handle, some grass, and a juneberry.
Her statement: “If you get a little bit hungry while you’re walking you could eat the berry. But you have to keep that basket in the refrigerator.”
Her friend, also five, made some solid progress weaving the sides of a little practice basket.
We sent her home with the work-in-progress and some extra willow sticks. She was into it. Then we had to give her little brother his own bundle of sticks, but not too long, because he might hit.
